How do you celebrate?

Yesterday I celebrated spending a little time with @terriclarkmusic during her Christmas Instagram live (second photo).

This is going to be a long post. Because yesterday was a long day and it’s been a long year.

That being said, I’ve thought about Terri a lot over these past few months. As I typically do during times of great change. It’s like I always try to ground myself by going back to something I know I will always identify with.

If you’re new here, you might not know I was a huge Terri Clark fan in my early teens and even saying it like that is a vast understatement. It was my life, my community, and my foundation.

Inadvertently, Terri created a safe haven for awkward teenage girls who didn’t really belong in their everyday lives. She gave us a place to connect and love the things we loved without reproach. And I didn’t realize any of that at the time.

But now as I go through the great existential crisis of turning 30 during a pandemic—it feels so big.

I realize now, it made me most of who I am today. The people I talk to the most in my life, I would not even know if it hadn’t been for Terri. My confidence in walking my own path and being exactly who I am without apology all started from a seed she planted all those years ago.

I know I’ve told this story before, but 15 years ago, Terri said to my mother “Someday she’ll forget all about me.” And I still remember the way my heart sank when she said it, which is funny because looking back, I think it was one of the greatest things she’s ever said. Because what she was saying is that I would no longer need to hide in the safe haven she’d created. I would find my footing as a strong independent woman. And that’s what I think about in these times of change. That we are in constant growth and with each new thing, we can come out of our comfort zone and walk confidently into the next phase.

As my life as gotten busier, my space for Terri has ebbed and flowed, but there is never a time when I see her and don’t feel a tug on my heartstrings, recognizing a very important part of me in her. That’s how I felt last night. #chelzcelebrates2

I don’t know Corb Lund extremely well, but I’ve always been a fan from afar. Now, I’m a lifer. @corblund is right – This is a big deal and a bad deal. As an Albertan who enjoys fly-fishing in our clear waters and spending time in the outdoors, I hope our government listens, consults and re-considers. We can’t put short-sighted economic benefit ahead of long-term consequences that could devastate our people and land for generations to come. Please see the link in my story to see Corb talk about open pit coal mining in our Rocky Mountains, and how you can #SaveOurMountains
